Title: Does Maintained Spinal Manipulation Therapy for Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain Result in Better Long-Term Outcome?
Authors: Mohammed K. Senna, M.D. and Shereen A. Machaly, M.D.
Results: The group of participants who was given spinal manipulations (adjustments) during the follow-up period (maintenance treatment) showed more improvement in pain and disability scores at the 10-month evaluation than participants who did not participate in maintenance care. The group that did not participate in maintenance treatment, the pain and disability scores returned back to near their pre-treatment level.

Title: Efficacy of tart cherry juice in reducing muscle pain during running: A randomized controlled trial.
Authors: Kuehl, K. S., Perrier, E. T., Elliot, D. L., and Chesnutt, J. C.
Results: Athletes who consumed Montmorency cherry juice prior to a relay race reported less pain than those who received a placebo. High levels of an anti-inflammatory substance (the same enzyme found in over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen) occurs in tart/sour cherries.

Title: Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) and an anti-inflammatory: An alternative to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for discogenic pain.
Authors: Maroon, J.C. and Bost, J. W.
Results: Patients with neck or back pain who took 1200 mg per day of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil supplements in addition to their (the patient’s) prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug were satisfied (80% margin) with the pain-relieving effects they were receiving. Fifty-nine percent of participants in this study discontinued taking their prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (prescribed to them for pain relief), and 60% stated that their overall pain had improved. Results suggested that omega-3 fatty acid fish oil supplements appear to be a safer alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for treatment of nonsurgical back or neck pain (in the group studied).
